When it comes to installing an electric vehicle charger for your apartment or condo, there are many factors which can make it harder to install than installing one for a single family residence. HOA’s are just starting to create rules and regulations for the installation of EV chargers. Municipalities are just now starting to get used to inspecting the installation of EV chargers as well.

There is the possibility that you might have to deal with an inspector or property manager that will make it difficult for you to get an EV charger installed for your electric vehicle. That is where the experts at Modern Electric Services can help. We have been installing EV chargers for homes, businesses, condos and apartments in the Los Angeles area for years. We can help you get through the red tape and work with your HOA, property manager or your city utility company to get your EV charger installed.

Where Is Your Electrical Panel?

You need to find out where the electrical panel is in your apartment or condo. You might not have access to see your main panel in some apartments and condos. Some apartment or condos have sub panels within the unit. Once you find out where your panel is, see if it has any extra space. EV chargers need a dedicated circuit to power them, much like your washing machine or electric range. If you are not sure if your panel can handle a new circuit take a photo so you can show it to your electrician. They should be able to tell by the photo if your panel can handle the extra load.

Where You Park Your Electric Vehicle

Once you know where your electric panel is, you need to measure the distance between your panel and where you park your car. Level 2 EV Chargers come with a cord that extends from the charger to plug into your car. These cords can be up to 20 ft. long, however, others can be shorter. Knowing the distance between your panel and where you park your EV will help to determine the cost of your EV charger installation.

Property Managers and HOA's

When you find out where your panel is and how far it is to where you park your electric vehicle you can now talk to your property manager or HOA. Hopefully, your property manager or landlord is already experienced with installing an electric vehicle chargers. If they are not we will be happy to walk them through the process.
